group 7: Explorations in Colour

Brian Bishop, Martyn Brewster, Bonnie Brown, Fran Donovan, Michelle Griffiths, Ursula Leach, and Peter Symons are group 7.

group 7 was formed from the original “7 ARTISTS” which was established in the 1970's. The current group of artists have been exhibiting together for 10 years.

The seven artists who comprise group 7 live and work in Dorset and Wiltshire. They are all long-term practitioners who have a strong commitment to the media of painting, drawing and printmaking.

The group is united by their love of the relevance and vitality of painting and printmaking.  They share a general attitude of mind to uphold certain values in the arts whilst exploring space, surface, colour, form and mark-making although the way these are used varies significantly between the artists.  Much of the work is based on evocation and resonance of the subject, rarely a literal description, more allusion, allowing the colours and marks to carry meaning and significance in their own right.

The artists have variously exhibited widely and have works in public and private collections in the UK, EU and USA. Most of the artists have work in hospitals and hospices including: Paintings in Hospitals Collection, St George’s, Chelsea & Westminster, St Mark’s, Salisbury, Southampton, Royal Hampshire, Worthing, The Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, Dorset County Hospital and Lewis Manning Hospice.

group 7’s work lends itself to the environment of a hospital as it is uplifting and life enhancing, bringing a positivity to the spaces it will inhabit.

Suzy Rushbrook Arts in Hospital Manager at Dorset County Hospital said

“It’s fantastic to have such a bright a colourful show to brighten up the darkest of Januarys”

“Obviously we aren’t encouraging people to visit the hospital at the moment, as we usually would, the work is on show mainly to promote staff wellbeing and to act as a morale booster. However, the exhibition will be available to view on line in full from Monday https://dchartsinhospital.org.uk/"
