The Geometry of Things

Last September I was delighted to be one of the judges of Dorset Visual Arts’ inaugural Open art competition, hosted by Dorset Museum & Art Gallery.

One of the prizes was a three-month exhibition here at the hospital. Our Arts in Hospital team selected two artists, one working in 2D and the other in 3D, whose work we felt complimented each other. We hope you enjoy Tim Edgar and Mark Hilde, in their collaborative exhibition ‘The Geometry of Things'.

Mark Hilde is a ceramic artist whose contemporary sculptural work explores the relationship between nature and form. Inspired by coastal landscapes, organic movement and architectural structures, he creates elegant stoneware sculptures that balance simplicity with refined craftsmanship

Tim Edgar’s contemporary drawing practice sees an overlap between Art, Maths and Science. Using a variety of analogue media, the detailed works explore connections between micro and macro worlds. The aim of his work is to prompt reflection on the cellular, the cosmic and their fragile interconnectedness.

What is particularly interesting is the correlation between pattern or tessellation, and health and relaxation, a geometric psychology. Repetition can signify stability and order. Repeating structures are found everywhere in nature, from microscopic cellular layers to leaf patterns. These induce the same Biophilic effect as our human response to plants and trees. It suggests that our human brains are biologically wired to find calm, safety and healing in natural shapes and patterns, making this an ideal exhibition for the hospital.
