Work installed this week in the Portesham Discharge Lounge is the conclusion of an assessed commission project produced for Arts in Hospital in 2024.

Carol was asked to develop a site-specific painting to provide distraction, reduce anxiety, introduce colour and provide a more comfortable environment for staff and patients at the hospital.

The work was inspired by the notion, articulated by Grayson Perry in 2011, that map making is ‘Symptomatic of our desire to make sense of the unpredictable and irrational in our lives’. Carol draws ideas from the sixteenth century illustrated maps displayed in the Vatican Museum Map Room in Rome.

Carol reinterprets an OS map of West Dorset to engage the viewer with a calming pallet of greens and blues. The landscape is designed to be viewed from farther away, as if looking over the top of an unfolded walking map.

We are very happy to share that following this project Carol will continue to work with Arts in Hospital as resident artist in 2025.
