Phil Mead
A creative couple’s visual diary of their hospital experience
Artist Phil Mead has donated 2 fabulous pictures following treatment here at DCH. This Visual Diary, subsequently entitled `Hospital Daze’, shows a creative interpretation of a hospital stay. While Phil used his sketchbook, his wife Sarah took photographs.
“I was admitted to DCH on 3 December 2023 with acute kidney failure and received wonderfully kind treatment over the course of my 2½ week stay there.
I had brought a sketchbook, pens and glue sticks with me when admitted. I used these together with various bits of collage material to record not so much my physical surroundings, but more my utterly confused state of mind during my treatment and recovery.
As I use collage in various aspects of my artwork, the use of it while in hospital gave me a sort of anchor of ‘normality’ during a situation which was, by turns, confusing, incomprehensible and strange.”
Having admired the hospital art collection, Phil felt moved to donate some of his own work and to share his story of how he and his wife processed their experience.
